Mount Gessi is situated in the northern section of Mount Stanley, Speke, and Mount Baker, close to Mount Emin. The summit was designated in honor of Romulo Gessi, an Italian adventurer. In the Rwenzori Mountains National Park, the mountain is situated adjacent to Emin, with a small valley acting as a barrier. It is characterized by two summits, namely Lolanda and Bottego, which have heights of 15,470 ft and 15,418 ft, respectively. Gessi, standing at an elevation of 15,018 feet (4578 meters), is among the six Rwenzori summits located in the Northern Triangle. The region also includes Mount Stanley, Baker and Speke. Gessi, the fifth highest peak in Uganda, is situated within a narrow canyon that branches off from Mount Emin and reaches southwards.

The mountains are situated in a north-south axis, characterized by stony terrain, and the highest peak is oriented towards the south. The Mount Gessi expedition is characterized by the presence of cottages and inclined paths on both the Democratic Republic of Congo and Ugandan territories. The trek to Gessi involves traversing a brief route from Mutsori in Congo to reach its summit, with the majority of the local tribespeople serving as porters and guides during the journey. Multiple shanties have been conserved around the Rwenzori region.
