Mount Rwenzori National Park harbors a total of 18 animal species, 217 bird species, 9 reptile species, and 6 amphibian species. The forest zone is inhabited by a variety of large species such as elephants, buffaloes, huge forest hogs, bushbucks, chimpanzees, and leopards. However, sightings of these animals are infrequent. Elephant excrement is commonly encountered, and the sounds of chimpanzees can often be heard, while sightings of blue monkeys and the native Ruwenzori colobus are possible. The Rwenzori region has a total of 217 documented avian species, with the majority being found within the forested area around the park’s perimeter. The species of interest comprises the Ruwenzori turaco, Rwenzori batis, Rwenzori double collared sunbird, handsome francolin, weird weaver, Rwenzori nightjar, Archer’s robin-chat, and red-throated alethe. The highest regions of the mountain have limited wildlife due to the challenging conditions.

However, one can observe the scarlet-tufted malachite sunbird, which feeds on lobelia flowers, and the endangered lammergeyer, which can be seen soaring above. The primary allure of Rwenzori Mountains National Park is in its lush vegetation, which thrives at altitudes over 5000m. This unique environment provides a haven for the distinctive plant species found only in the highest mountains of East Africa. The lowest zone, located between the park boundary and the 2500m contour, is characterized by montane forest. The transition from lower elevations (2,500-3,000m) is marked by the presence of bamboo, followed by clusters of Rapanea and large heathers adorned with lianas, epiphytes, and lichens. These plants are covered in brightly colored mosses at higher altitudes (3,000-4,000m). At an elevation beyond 4000m, the slope expands into moorland that is scattered with the distinctive – and in certain instances exclusive – species of giant lobelia and groundsel, which are renowned features of the Rwenzori.
